"Basking in the clear light of the south, Marrakech has an entirely different feel from its sister cities to the north. It remains unmistakably more African than cosmopolitan Casablanca, more Moroccan than santised Rabat, and more Berber than proud and aloof Fes." Lonely Planet: Morocco 2003. The markets... This huge square is the focal point of Marrakech, and one of the worlds greatest cultural spectacles. Djemma el-Fna is lively all day long, but as suset approaches street performers move in: snake charmers, jugglers, story-tellers, musicians, belly dancers and acrobats. Also, dozens of open air food stalls set up in the area between the many orange juice stalls, and smoke fills the air. |
