For three weeks in January, 2004, I travelled to Morocco with my friend Gertjan from Holland. Gertjan (aka. John) and I met in New Zealand in October 2002 and travelled together there for six weeks. When I started making plans to travel again this winter I contacted him because we were such good travelling buddies in NZ.

Morocco has been on my destination list for some time for several reasons. French is spoken there I was hoping for an opportunity to practice. Also, Morocco is in Africa and has a very different culture than anywhere I have been, but it is close to Europe and relatively easy to get to with out spending a fortune. So off we went.

I flew to Holland where I spent two days in Dordrecht at John's place, seeing a bit of the city and making last minute preparations. We then flew to Malaga, Spain and took the bus to Algeciras, where we took the ferry over to Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on the African mainland. After travelling around Morocco (see Map), we returned to Algeciras via Tangier.

While in Morocco, we took seven buses, nineteen taxis, three trains, four mini-vans, one horse and one camel. We stayed in nine hotels, one hostel, one auberge and slept out under the starts in the dunes of Erg Chebbi and on the roof of a hotel in the Dades Gorge. We ate at sixteen restaurants, in the dining rooms of three hotels, in a Berber tent in the desert and feasted on bread, cheese and veggies many, many times in many, many locations. I took ten showers (I won't speak for John), most of which were pleasantly warm, some of which were downright hot, and one which icy cold. And finally, I bought 25 souvenirs for under 100 dollars and one for 65 which is too embarassing to discuss.

I hope you enjoy the pictures and writing and please contact me if you want any further information or larger digital copies of any pictures.
