Ait Benhaddou is one of the largest and best preserved kasbahs (old fortress) in the Atlas region. It has had a lot of money poured into it because it was used in as many as 20 films, including Lawrence of Arabia, Jesus of Nazareth and Gladiator. Some people still live in the kasbah, but its population has dwindled in recent years. Ait Benhaddou is now under Unesco protection.
